For those who enjoy outdoor living, Baden has a lot to offer. From miles of riverside cycle paths along the Helenental valley floor to steep walks from the doorstep through scented pine forests to ancient castles and ruins, there's never a shortage of eye-opening things to do. The high spot for many is the culture of the thermal wine-growing region (hence the entire next page is devoted to that...) Click images to enlarge, hover mouse over for info:

Baden is situated at the foot of the undulating hill range of the Vienna Woods. Being once the spa resort of the Romans then  later on, Vienna's aristocracy, it has grown to become a town with some diverse, unusual and stimulating attractions.

Vienna is around 23 mins by train and the fascinating UNESCO Neusiedlersee lake is just 40 mins by car.

The Neusiedlersee lake is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has some fascinating characteristics. Having a clay bed and one of the largest surface areas in Europe, it is only chest-deep at its deepest and to this day no-one really knows where it comes from or how it's water level is maintained. It is popular for yachting, wind-surfing and family visits to the small resorts around its shores. There are several leisure parks for children as well as ancient towns where stalks arrive in springtime from Africa and inhabit big nests atop the village chimney stacks.
